Shirodhara is a specialized upkarma of the Panchakarma treatment. It is one of the four ‘murdhni taila’ treatments used for nourishment of the brain. It helps to enhance the functioning of the brain by reducing stress, memory and improving quality of sleep. It is one of the most preferred treatments in psychological disorders.
Shirodhara is carried out with the help of a special vessel which pours the medicine, drop by drop about 4-5 inches above the forehead. A band is tied on the forehead at the level of the eyebrows, so as to restrict the medicine to flow into the eyes. The eyes are covered with cotton pads soaked in rosewater. The medicine is then is poured on the forehead drop by drop and at the same time the oil is slowly massaged into the scalp.
Although simple, Shirodhara is a highly potent therapy. One must take care that the medicines used should at a tolerable temperature and not too hot.
Careful preparation and post-therapy care is a must. All procedural steps must be followed without any shortcuts.
